Sergio Acosta Receives Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois' Aguila Award
Chicago, IL – Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP partner Sergio E. Acosta has been honored with the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois' (HLAI's) 2016 Aguila Award, the association's highest honor. Mr. Acosta received the award at the HLAI's 20th Anniversary Fiesta event on May 12, 2016.
The Aguila Award is given to an HLAI member who demonstrates a unique blend of professional accomplishment, community service and dedication to the organization. In informing Mr. Acosta of his honor, the HLAI noted Mr. Acosta's: leadership within Hinshaw, including as chair of the firm's Government Practice Group and as a member of the firm's Diversity Committee; many accomplishments as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, including his leadership positions; efforts as co-chair of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's Task Force on Police Accountability, then-Illinois Governor Pat Quinn's Illinois Concealed Carry License Review Board, and other public task forces; and invaluable input as an HLAI board member.
Mr. Acosta is an experienced criminal litigator and investigator. He has represented companies, government entities and individuals in matters involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, complex financial fraud, criminal tax violations, export regulations and criminal forfeiture. His practice also encompasses corporate governance, corporate internal investigations, regulatory enforcement, commercial litigation and gaming law. Before joining Hinshaw, Mr. Acosta held leading roles in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois; served as Administrator of the Illinois Gaming Board; and was a prosecutor in the Miami-Dade County State Attorney's Office.
