Ken Yeadon Talks to HealthcareDive about $1.3bn Federal Health Care Fraud Takedown
Hinshaw partner Ken Yeadon, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney, discussed with reporter of Jeff Byers of HealthcareDive the recent announcement by the U.S. Department of Justice of federal charges against 412 individuals with over a total of $1.3 billion in false billings. The takedown was the largest healthcare fraud enforcement action in Department of Justice history.
Yeadon noted that healthcare fraud is a "huge problem for government programs," adding that fraud deterrence was part of the sting's mission. As evidence of a trend of increased enforcement, he pointed to the growing number of federal districts involved in healthcare fraud takedowns year-over-year. Finally, he said that while legitimate providers will face increasing scrutiny over billing claims, the recent takedown is primarily meant to underline that the risk of knowingly participating in false billing practices is not worth the short-term benefits.
