Hinshaw Hosts Climate Change Dinner and Sponsors National Resiliency Conference
Earlier this spring, Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP sponsored a Community Resilience conference organized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and held at the University of Miami's Newman Alumni Center in Coral Gables, Florida.
Hinshaw's Chairman Kevin Burke delivered the welcoming remarks at the event, and Miami Partner Ron Kammer spoke as a featured panelist, discussing strategies being adopted by the insurance industry to respond to extreme weather events. The event was well attended and attracted several members of the press, including representatives from the New York Times, Bloomberg News, the Miami Herald, and the Miami Daily Business Review. Reporter Nathan Hale of Law360 participated via the event livestream and published an article titled "Fla. Resiliency Action Key to Insurance Stability: Experts."
On the evening prior to the conference, Hinshaw hosted 100 distinguished guests at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida. Chairman Burke, who was introduced by Miami Partner Eliot Abbott, delivered opening remarks to the group that included industry leaders from the fields of real estate development, insurance, and finance.
The evening's featured speakers were Prof. Jesse M. Keenan of Harvard University's Graduate School of Design and Of Counsel to Hinshaw, and David van der Leer of the Van Alen Institute of New York.
Professor Keenan serves as Vice-Chair for the U.S. Community Resilience Panel, a federal interagency initiative under the White House Climate Adaptation Plan, which put on the conference, and also serves as editorial team co-lead for the Built Environment at the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit at climate.gov. Mr. Van der Leer is Executive Director of the Van Alen Institute, a thought leader in the field of climate change.
