Tom Luetkemeyer Discusses the Trend of Microunit Unionizing
Hinshaw attorney Tom Luetkemeyer talked with Julie Cook Ramirez of Human Resource Executive about the trend towards so-called microunits of union bargaining power. A microunit refers to a small group of all employees at a given worksite that has been certified as a bargaining unit.
Luetkemeyer said that unions have embraced the microunit approach, since it's much easier to organize a small group of employees than an entire department or workplace. He also notes that microunits pose a major logistical challenge for employers, who may find they have to administer different work rules, compensation and benefits structures, as well as disciplinary requirements for each bargaining unit.
