Ian Wagreich Presents Two Handbook Chapters on Categories of Employment-Based Immigration and Considerations in Applying for Lawful Permanent Residence
Hinshaw partner Ian Wagreich recently co-authored chapters in two handbooks published by the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). The first chapter, titled "Employment-Based Immigration: The First Three Preferences," was included in the 2022-2023 Handbook Edition of Navigating the Fundamentals of Immigration Law. The second chapter, titled "Strategies and Considerations in Applying for U.S. Permanent Residence," was included in the 2022-2023 Handbook Edition of Immigration Practice Pointers: Tips for Handling Complex Cases. The handbooks were distributed to all attendees of the 2022 AILA Annual Conference as part of their conference materials.
"Employment-Based Immigration: The First Three Preferences" provides a detailed outline of the first three categories of employment-based immigration and the statutory and regulatory requirements for each classification. The categories include: First Preference EB-1 (priority workers), Second Preference EB-2 (members of the professions holding advanced degrees or individuals of exceptional ability), and Third Preference EB-3 (professionals, skilled workers, and other workers).
"Strategies and Considerations in Applying for U.S. Permanent Residence" examines the benefits and potential issues for a client to consider when obtaining U.S. lawful permanent residence (LPR). The article addresses how becoming an LPR can impact family members, employers and co-workers, and criminal considerations as well as the long-term benefits of having a green card should we live through another pandemic or similarly disruptive event. Wagreich notes that immigration practitioners play a critical role in their clients’ career and life decisions.
