Scott Seaman Selected for Crain's Chicago 2025 Notable Litigators and Trial Attorneys
Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP is pleased to announce that partner Scott Seaman has been selected by Crain's Chicago Business to its 2025 Notable Litigators and Trial Attorneys list. Seaman is co-chair of Hinshaw's Global Insurance Services Practice Group and co-leader of the Insurance Industry sector group.
The award recognizes Chicago area litigators and trial attorneys who have led high-stakes cases and bet-the-company litigation with outcomes that had a significant, positive, and precedent-setting impact on client companies and their industry sectors. The publication also notes that their impact "extends beyond the courtroom, with leadership in professional organizations, mentorship, and community service."
Seaman was selected based on several recent notable litigation matters. Notable among those, he represented insurers in multi-million dollar claims, including asbestos coverage action in New York federal court, and environmental coverage action in the Northern District of Illinois, which the U.S. Court of Appeals affirmed for the Seventh Circuit. In addition, he handled a nationwide class action involving health insurance, representations and warranty arbitration, and a lead paint coverage case in California, which was affirmed on appeal.

Seaman represents insurers and businesses in high-stakes litigation matters in trial and appellate courts nationwide. Recognized as a nationally leading property/casualty litigator, he represents clients in liability and property insurance, reinsurance, bad faith, cyber, and D&O matters. As co-chair of the Global Insurance Services Practice Group for nine years, he has driven the group's growth to more than 100 attorneys and more than $53 million in revenue.
He is one of the co-leaders of Global Access Lawyers, an alliance of leading worldwide law firms that represent insurers. Widely regarded as a litigation and insurance law thought leader, Seaman has published extensively on insurance law topics and is a frequent speaker on industry panels. His two-volume treatise, Allocation of Losses in Complex Insurance Coverage Claims (12 Ed. Thomson Reuters 2024), addresses many issues driving contemporary insurance and reinsurance claims, coverage actions, and arbitrations.
Seaman was named to the inaugural list of Midwest Trailblazers by The American Lawyer magazine. The list recognizes 50 professionals from 12 Midwestern states "who have moved the needle in the legal industry" and "are truly agents of change." He was selected for his "high-profile, complex insurance coverage cases nationwide, which resulted in precedent-setting rulings that have altered insurance law." He was also named to the Crain's Chicago Business 2024 Notable Leaders in Accounting, Consulting & Law. He has a Band 1 Ranking for Insurance: Dispute Resolution – Illinois from Chambers USA and is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation, the American College of Coverage Counsel, and the Litigation Counsel of America.
In addition to his firm leadership role and active practice, Seaman is involved in nonprofit leadership in the community. He co-founded the Chicago Chapter of the Lymphoma Research Foundation and received the foundation's inaugural Tribute Award. He is also a founding board member of the Hippocratic Cancer Research Foundation and co-chaired the foundation's 2022 gala benefitting the Lurie Cancer Center. Seaman previously served on the National Board of Selectors of the Jefferson Awards for Public Service and as co-chair of the Jefferson Awards Chicago. In this role, he selected area and national winners and served on a delegation to the White House and U.S. Senate, reporting on the state of volunteerism in the nation and helping develop programming for a youth leadership program for at-risk youth.
